Chilliwack River Watershed Strategy

The Chilliwack River Watershed Strategy was initiated in 2004 with the goal of improving decision making in the Chilliwack River Watershed by building a common understanding of watershed issues, values and solutions based on sound science and local knowledge.  Originated by a partnership between the Fraser Valley Regional District, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and the Fraser Valley Regional Watersheds Coalition, this multi-jurisdictional project now involves the provincial government, First Nations, the Fraser Basin Council, and the community.

For more information about this project, please visit the project website at www.chilliwackwatershedstrategy.ca.

Pierce Ponds

With funding from the Pacific Salmon Commission Southern Fund and the Fraser Salmon and Watersheds Program, FVRWC and partners are working on a project to expand coho overwintering and spawning habitat in the Chilliwack River Valley.

Lovely Pond

The Chilliwack River Action Committee completed fisheries enhancement work adjacent to Lovely Pond at Thompson Park in the Chilliwack River Valley in 2005. This project involved expanding over-wintering habitat for salmon and constructing an interpretive trail. Recent monitoring has shown that the new habitat is being fully utilized by coho and other fish species. Sponsors included the Pacific Salmon Foundation, Pacific Salmon Commission Southern Fund, Chilliwack River Valley Ratepayers Association and the Chilliwack Fish and Game Protective Association.

Hope Slough Enhancement Project

The Fraser Valley Regional Watersheds Coalition has completed its work at Hope River Corbould Park in the City of Chilliwack. Funded by the Pacific Salmon Commission Southern Fund, instream work to restore fish habitat in Hope Slough was conducted in late August and early September. A viewing platform and trail allows for public access to the site. This project was a cooperative effort between Fisheries and Oceans Canada, City of Chilliwack Parks, Fraser Valley Regional District and the Chilliwack Fish and Game Protective Association. Many salmon returns were observed this October!

Due to the success of this project, another spawning riffle and viewing area is being constructed at Kinsmen Park in 2006.

Clayburn Creek Watershed

The Fraser Valley Conservancy is working with the Abbotsford Streamkeepers, Central Valley Naturalists and the Abbotsford Soil Conservation Society to map the various values in the Clayburn Creek Watershed. This project will lead into future mapping projects and assist in better management of urban watersheds in the Abbotsford area.

Please contact the Fraser Valley Conservancy for further information.

Salish Sucker Outreach Program

The Salish Sucker and Nooksack Dace  have been placed on the endangered list under the Species At Risk Act (SARA) due to the degradation of their habitat. Conservation of their habitat is critical. The Langley Environmental Partners Society, the Fraser Valley Regional Watersheds Coalition, the Salish Sucker Recovery Team, DFO, and the District of Kent have been involved in outreach efforts in the Fish Creek, Pepin Creek, Mountain Slough, Miami River, and Agassiz Slough watersheds.  Watersheds in the Chilliwack area will be the focus of outreach efforts in the fall of 2006.

LEPS wishes to continue to bridge the gap between the local community and its sensitive environment surrounding.
